When students are learning to read in English, we teach them letter sounds so they can sound out new words (decode). We also help them memorize 'sight words'. These are the words that do not follow our phonetic rules, or if they do follow our rules (meaning they are decodable), they occur so often that it is helpful to know them as soon as they see them.
Below is a list of sight words for beginning reader through third grade. I am in the process of retesting all of the students to see if they can read all of the words. If your child is still learning their sight words, I will be sending home a list of the words they need to practice along with some suggestions on how to practice them.
When practicing new words, it is important to mix one new word with nine of the words they already know. This will help your child learn that one new word very quickly. Rotate 'known' words each time you introduce an unknown word.
